Meditation

Does it ever get easier?

People often ask me whether meditation gets easier.

I usually smile and say, "Not in the way you think."

You don't suddenly stop having thoughts.

You don't reach a point where your mind becomes permanently calm.

At least, I haven't.

What changes is your relationship with it.

You stop expecting every meditation to be peaceful.

You stop measuring whether you've done it well.

You stop trying to empty your mind and begin allowing your mind to be exactly as it is.

Some days meditation feels spacious.

Some days it feels restless.

Some days you spend twenty minutes thinking about your shopping list.

And yet, all of it is practice.

Perhaps that's the gentle surprise of meditation.

The easier part isn't the meditation itself.

It's the way you begin to meet your own experience.

With a little more patience.

A little more kindness.

And a little less need for everything to be different.
